Short answer

Thumbtack measures your response rate as the percentage of leads you respond to within one hour, between 8am and 8pm local time. In Pro Rewards, Gold requires a 65% response rate and Platinum 75%, and Platinum pros get the Top Pro badge. Thumbtack also says response rate affects your rank in search results.

TL;DR

  • Gold: reply within 1 hour, 65% of the time. Platinum: 75%. Silver has no response requirement.
  • The 1-hour window counts 8am–8pm local time: a lead at 10pm counts until 9am the next day.
  • Ratings: 4.5 / 4.6 / 4.7 stars for Silver / Gold / Platinum. The Top Pro badge comes with Platinum.
  • Status is earned in three-month qualifying periods and lasts through the next period.

How does Thumbtack measure response time?

For Pro Rewards, Thumbtack uses a response rate: “the percentage of leads you respond to within an hour (between 8am - 8pm local time).” If you get a lead at 10pm, you have until 9am the next day for it to count. If you offer more than one service, the rate covers how quickly you respond across all of them. For Pro Rewards it looks at the three previous months, and it can take up to 8 hours after a reply to show up. You can see your rate and how you compare with your market in the Performance dashboard (Thumbtack Help: What is the Thumbtack Pro Rewards program?).

There are two different speed messages from Thumbtack, and it helps to keep them apart. The Pro Rewards metric is one hour. Thumbtack’s general messaging guide tells pros to “aim to respond within four hours” between 8am and 8pm local time, “but the sooner the better,” and says your response rate affects your rank in search results (Thumbtack Help: guide to getting hired with your messages). What does each Pro Rewards tier require?

Tier Star rating Response rate (within 1 hour) Points Rewards
Silver 4.5 No requirement 300 Success workshops; swag for one-year anniversaries
Gold 4.6 65% 1,200 Everything in Silver, plus priority support, the Partnership Committee and marketing courses
Platinum 4.7 75% 2,400 Everything in Gold, plus the Top Pro badge and a chance to be a Featured Expert

Points come from activity: 100 points for every lead or Opportunity you respond to after the customer messages you, and 600 points for adding an integration, meaning linking your Thumbtack account with one of Thumbtack’s partner platforms. Points reset to 0 at the start of each qualifying period. All tiers also need a completed background check and at least one photo on your profile. The star rating is calculated on a three-month rolling period using verified “Hired on Thumbtack” reviews from the past 12 months.

Customers see the Top Pro badge on your profile and in search results once you reach Platinum. Silver and Gold status is visible only to you. Thumbtack also awards a Top Pro badge for the year if you earn Platinum in at least two of the four periods of that year.

How do qualifying periods work?

Thumbtack has four qualifying periods a year: December to February, March to May, June to August, and September to November. Once you qualify for Silver, Gold or Platinum, you keep those rewards for the rest of that period and the entire next one. Thumbtack’s example: qualify for Platinum at the end of July and you have Platinum rewards through November.

To keep a tier you have to keep meeting the points and quality requirements, and if you do not, your status is adjusted after the next period. In practice a slow stretch can cost you more than one month, so consistency matters more than a good week.

What should your first Thumbtack reply say?

Thumbtack’s own guidance is about substance as well as speed. Its messaging guide suggests you read the customer’s whole message first, greet them by name, answer their questions and talk about their specific job, and invite them to take the next step, for example by saying when you are available for an estimate. Its built-in AI draft “ends with one simple question, making it easy for them to respond.” So a good first reply:

  1. Acknowledges the specific request.
  2. References the service or timing the customer mentioned.
  3. Explains the next step clearly.
  4. Ends with one simple question that moves the job forward.

An example of the difference (illustrative, not a real customer message):

How do you hit 75% within an hour when you are on a job?

  1. Know your window. Only 8am–8pm local time counts, and a lead that arrives at night counts until 9am.
  2. Turn on push notifications for new leads in the Thumbtack Pro app, for everyone who can answer. Thumbtack calls this the best way to respond quickly.
  3. Answer leads before Opportunities. Leads are already paid for, and Thumbtack tells pros to respond to them first.
  4. Decline what you will not take. Acting on each lead affects your response time even if you are not interested, and declining lets the customer keep looking.
  5. Hand off the first reply. A teammate, an answering service or software can send it when the crew’s hands are full. We compare the options in Thumbtack Instant Reply vs an AI auto-responder. The rest of the conversation, price and schedule stay with you.
